of the house, the three houses directly opposite are used as

rice pounding shops. The dust from these shops compel me to

keep y windows shut all cay.

Due to the continual noise going on at night,

I am unable to get my proper rest. Facing the house on the east is a fish market which opens on the arrival of the Can

ton Steamer generally about 3a... and is kept open till about

6a. It is quite impossible to sleep during the market hours

The men are shouting at the top of their voice, the price

and weight of fish I have on several occasions called on the

Police to try and put a stop to the noise.

Adjoining y bedroom separated by an ordinary

house wall lives a tinsmith who works till 11p..every night

so y nights rest has to be obtained

between 11 p.m. and

3a.m. Again in the event of a fire I am awaken up by the

noise made in getting the engine in and out and by the

peating of gongs.

At Chinese New Year and other Chinese holi

days the noise of the crackers and gongs is kept up night

and day-thus making it impossidle to get any rest.

As the Secretary of state has assessed my

quarters at so high a rate as $762 a year I would most huz

bly apply that the increase in my quarters may with the

above mentione. facts be reconsidered as I would most willing-

ly give them over for $420 a year as assessed last year and

find a more quite abode as near the Harbour office as possi

ble.
